Senior Commercial Manager - London

Vacancy available until May 25th, 2020.

Job reference: TP-00113

01 May 2020

The largest operator of district heating in western Europe, serving over 2 million customers, Vattenfall Heat provides low and zero carbon heating and cooling solutions for private developers and public sector clients.   Vattenfall is a Swedish-state owned utility and the 5th largest energy company in Europe.  We have a uniting and clear purpose, to deliver fossil free living for our customers and the societies in which we operate within one generation.

Formed two years ago, the Vattenfall Heat team in the UK has secured its first major contracts and has a healthy pipeline and a reputation for disrupting and challenging the market- particularly in regards to driving environmental performance of heat solutions.

This exciting role comes at a time when the UK is seeking to transform the way to deliver urban infrastructure in order to achieve the environmental impact needed to address the climate emergency – Vattenfall will be on the forefront of this transformation.  The Senior Commercial Manager plays a critical part in enabling the business to win large, long term contracts as Vattenfall moves to become a dominant player in the Uk district energy market, building on our existing extensive pan-European operations.

About the Role

As our Senior Commercial Manager in the Commercial & Strategy team, you will work across all contracts that the business is developing in the market, bringing best practice commercial thinking to project development teams from your previous experience.

Working centrally under the Head of Commercial & Strategy, you will work to both support and challenge the contracts being developed and negotiated by the regional Commercial Managers, who report in to the local Regional Directors.  Practically helping them to recognise, analyse and mitigate risks you will bring real solutions to commercial challenges being faced by the teams from contractual positions through to risk modelling techniques – challenging margins, contingency pots, risk premiums and everything from underlying assumptions through to over-arching things like liability caps.

You will also be primarily responsible for managing the in-business project governance, bringing good challenge to projects and ensuring that the business focusses on the right issues and driving quality assurance and an outside-in view for the Regional Directors.  As a result of your work the business will make better commercial decisions, work more effectively and efficiently and develop more robust solutions and contracts.

Specific activity/objectives will include:

  1. Project reviews, health checks and steering through formal project governance
  2. Coaching and support for local Commercial Managers
  3. Standardising commercial positions
  4. Standardising approach to techno-economic modelling and contracts – particularly heads of terms
  5. Setting out negotiating strategies and how deals are developed
  6. Bringing ‘four eyes’ approach to commercial models and contracts being developed in the regions and objectively and constructively challenging those.
  7. Developing new, innovative solutions to new commercial challenges which are outside the experience of the local commercial managers
  8. Ensuring clear, transparent project planning and governance through to contract stage
  9. Working with Procurement to ensure supply chain contracts across the business are structured to suitable mitigate risks being accepted in contracts.
  10. Driving faster, better decisions in project mobilisation during preferred bidder stage to ensure we prioritise the right issues at the right time and that we reach contract quicker.
