Building skills for net zero: launch of the Heat Network Suite
Ben Carter, Account Director in our Scotland team, shares insights on Vattenfall’s pivotal role in launching the Heat Network Suite at the Energy Training Academy in Midlothian.
At the end of October, I had the privilege of celebrating the culmination of two and a half years of collaboration and commitment – a journey in which Vattenfall has played a central role. The official opening of the Heat Network Suite at the Energy Training Academy in Dalkeith marks a major milestone in Scotland’s transition to net zero.
This suite isn’t just a space for learning; it’s the physical embodiment of a shared vision for district heating across Scotland and a critical step in equipping the local workforce with the skills needed to deliver low carbon heating solutions.
The Energy Training Academy, a community interest company, is dedicated to delivering high-quality training for the energy sector. Their team of experienced instructors provides hands-on, practical learning to ensure every trainee leaves with the skills and confidence to thrive in this fast-evolving industry.
Why this matters
From the very beginning, co-founder Andrew Lamond, alongside key voices from the heat network industry and Midlothian Council, recognised the need for a dedicated space to support the region’s growing heat network sector.
As Andrew said on the day:
“As we accelerate towards Scotland’s net zero 2045 target, the shift to renewable, low carbon heating solutions is both inevitable and essential. That’s why it’s critical we prepare today’s workforce to serve tomorrow’s communities.”
I couldn’t agree more. This space is a perfect example of how collaboration can turn ambition into action.
Connecting to our work at Vattenfall
The importance of this new suite is closely tied to the development and operation of the MEL heat network, delivered by Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL) – a 50/50 joint venture between Vattenfall and Midlothian Council. Through this partnership, we’re spearheading the rollout of essential energy infrastructure and driving the transition to low carbon solutions across Midlothian and beyond.
To expand the MEL heat network and scale up heat networks across Scotland, we need a skilled workforce capable of building, maintaining, and operating these systems. That’s why the Heat Network Suite is such a game-changer – it not only raises awareness of heat networks but provides hands-on learning opportunities for local people. For many, it could be the first step toward a rewarding career in an industry that offers long-term prospects and plays a vital role in Scotland’s net zero future.
Our commitment to supply chain
At Vattenfall, we’re proud to sponsor the Heat Network Suite alongside other industry leaders and supply chain partners. Together, we’re committed to strengthening the local supply chain and future workforce; and helping Scotland increase the share of heat supplied by heat networks from under 2% to 8% by 2030 as backed by government.
Celebrating the launch
The launch event was a fantastic opportunity to bring industry and community together. We heard from the Energy Training Academy team and sponsors, including myself on behalf of Vattenfall, Fiona Clandillon from Midlothian Council, and Simon Kerr of SAV Systems. Over 50 attendees joined us from across the energy supply chain, the built environment sector, local community, and public sector.
Looking ahead
This new facility is set to become a hub for heat network education in Midlothian, supporting the development of a skilled workforce ready to meet Scotland’s future energy needs. I’m excited to see the Heat Network Suite come to life over the coming months and years – and proud that Vattenfall is playing a part in making it happen.
