About Vattenfall in Scotland

Our ambition for Scotland is to establish low carbon heat networks that bring reliable heating and hot water to communities, use local resources and recirculate value in the Scottish economy.

We’re working in partnership with Midlothian Council to deliver low carbon energy projects and developing additional projects in Granton and West Edinburgh.

A key element in the Net Zero transition

Heating Scotland’s 2.5 million homes accounts for 13% of Scotland’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The country is aiming to scale up deployment of zero emissions heating systems, setting ambitious targets for the amount of heat supplied by heat networks to rise from under 2% to 8% by 2030 in line with meeting the nation's Net Zero by 2024 target.

We are here to help achieve this goal, delivering low carbon heat across the country through our expanding heat networks. Our journey in Scotland has just begun, and we are excited to see the future of low carbon heat take shape as we grow. For more insight into our work in Scotland, watch the video below:

Our work in Midlothian

We are supporting Midlothian Council to achieve its climate targets, and in 2023 we formed a joint venture known as Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL) to deliver low carbon energy projects and investment into the region.

The first project is to supply low carbon heat to over 3,000 new homes in Midlothian via the MEL heat network.

Our longer-term plans include expanding the network into surrounding areas, connecting existing buildings and supporting other energy efficiency, generation and infrastructure projects.

Granton waterfront

In November 2023, we were selected as the preferred bidder to develop the heat network for Granton Waterfront, a £1.3 billion sustainable coastal community in Edinburgh. Our current focus is on exploring innovative heat sources, including harnessing energy from wastewater in sewers via heat pumps.

We will support the community at Granton by delivering low carbon heat to around 3,000 new net zero carbon homes, business start- up spaces, commercial premises, creative arts, culture and leisure spaces, and key services including a school and health centre.

Supporting social value

We are working toward closing the skills gap, engaging in a number of community and supply chain initiatives, and partnering with local organisations to inspire the next generation of energy professionals. We need a skilled workforce to design, build and operate heat networks - with projects presenting lifelong career opportunities.

Our current initiatives range from partnerships with local organisations engaging in primary and high schools, to attending careers fairs and offering internship opportunities.

As our projects expand, we will continue to support career pathways into heat networks, create local job opportunities and assist the growing supply chain in Scotland.
