Sparking young minds: introducing kids to heat networks

Inspiring curiosity today to help grow the next generation of heat network champions.

We’re excited to share a new initiative bringing heat networks to life for young learners: our Kids Activity Packs.

While our neighbours in Northern Europe have been using city-scale heat networks for decades, they’re still relatively new in the UK. That’s why it’s so important to build awareness early – helping young people understand what they are, how they work, and the role they play in a low carbon future.

Our activity packs offer a fun and interactive introduction to heat networks for primary school-aged children. They’re filled with energy-themed puzzles, games and illustrations – from colouring pages and pipe mazes to spot-the-difference challenges – all designed to make learning about energy engaging and accessible.

The journey begins with an overview of energy and fossil fuels, exploring their impact on climate change. From there, children learn how heat networks offer a low carbon alternative by distributing heat through a communal system. We’ve also included a section on careers in the sector, showcasing the kinds of jobs our teams do and encouraging kids to imagine themselves working on future heat network projects.

Why does this matter? Because the UK needs a skilled workforce to design, build and operate these systems, which are a key part of achieving our 2050 net zero target. Creating clear and accessible pathways into the sector starts with education, and resources like these are a first step. Learn more about our committment to social value here

It’s been fantastic to see children reading and using them at community events – and even better to hear from parents and teachers about how much fun they’ve had learning with our booklets.

After all, today’s children are tomorrow’s decision-makers. By sparking their curiosity now, we hope to inspire the next generation of heat network champions who may one day build and operate these vital systems.
