Our 2050 Vision
The Bristol heat network is a long-term infrastructure programme led by Vattenfall, designed to deliver low carbon heating at scale and support Bristol’s transition to a net zero future.
Our vision is that over half of all Bristolians living, working and learning in the city will be kept warm by the Bristol heat network by 2050*.
By installing and operating critical energy infrastructure above and below ground, the network will help decarbonise how Bristolians live, work and learn - making sustainable heat a part of everyday life.

This short film reveals our vision for Bristol’s heat network and how we’ll deliver low carbon heat to the places Bristolians live, work and learn.
*This estimate is based on projected connections to the Bristol heat network by 2050, including homes, workplaces, schools and healthcare buildings. By combining forecasts of connected floorspace with typical household sizes and space use in offices and schools, we’ve estimated how many Bristolians could benefit from low carbon heat, assuming full uptake of connections.
How Bristol's historic buildings are going low carbon
The Bristol heat network will offer a low carbon future for some of the city’s most iconic and historic civic buildings. Meaning the buildings Bristolians know and love won’t change, but their impact on the environment will.

How Bristol's heat network is enabling sustainable growth
The Bristol heat network will be the foundation for all major regeneration, unlocking a citywide heating solution for new residential developments, urban districts, education and innovation campuses.

What's been happening on the heat network

How we're connecting Bristol with a citywide low carbon heat network
As one of the most exciting and ambitious energy projects in the UK, the Bristol heat network will generate, store and distribute low carbon heat to the city in one single network that stretches east to west.

How Bristol is capturing heat from unexpected places
New energy centres, embedded into the city’s industrial architecture, will capture heat already available in the environment from places like the floating harbour, data centres and maybe even abandoned mines.

How we're working hand in hand with the city
The Bristol heat network will capture the spirit of the city, which cares proudly about the people, the environment and the buildings that make up its colourful skyline. We’ll work hand in hand with Bristol to remove fossil fuels and create a low carbon future where we live, work and learn.
How regulatory reform will drive Bristol's low carbon future
With national policy catching up with local ambition, we'll continue to support developers, investors and community groups, building confidence to choose heat networks within the regulatory landscape.
