The Granton heat network
Granton Waterfront is one of Scotland’s most ambitious regeneration projects — and Vattenfall is proud to be part of its sustainable future.
Planning the network: a collaborative approach
We’re working closely with the City of Edinburgh Council to design a low carbon heat network that supports the long-term vision for Granton Waterfront, a new coastal park of around 3000 homes.
Construction of the energy centre is planned to begin in 2026, with heat delivery to our first customers expected in 2027.

Where will the heat come from?

We are exploring innovative sources, including sewer heat recovery using heat pumps, to deliver low carbon energy to the community.
Who will be connected?
Around 3,000 new homes, business spaces, and key community services — including a new school and a health centre — are set to benefit from low carbon heat.
We also aim to link existing public sector buildings to the network, such as Edinburgh College, local schools, and the National Museums Collection Centre.

Working with the local community

We’re committed to engaging local residents and stakeholders at every stage — from events to on-the-ground conversations — to build trust and ensure lasting impact.
Most recently, our team took part in the North Edinburgh Community Festival and the Party in the Park event, marking the reopening of the Granton Gasholder.
At both events, we presented a model demonstrating how heat networks work, met residents of all ages, introduced Vattenfall, and shared our plans for the local area — including how these developments will benefit and impact the community.
